Intel’s next major desktop platform now appears less like a single CPU transition and more like a complete infrastructure reset. The earlier leak about the alleged 900-series chipset family for Nova Lake-S is therefore interesting again: according to a table circulated by Jaykihn, B960, Z970, Z990, Q970 and W980 are said to be intended for the new LGA1954 socket. This has not been officially confirmed. However, the more recent indications regarding LGA1954, larger BIOS ROMs, and a possible longer platform lifecycle now make the chipset list more than just a neat Excel line for leakers.
VideoCardz had already reported on the presumed Intel 900 series on 9 February 2026. The information comes from a leaked table by Jaykihn and names five chipsets: B960, Z970, Z990, Q970 and W980. LGA1954 is listed as the basis, meaning a new socket for Nova Lake-S. Intel itself has confirmed neither the chipset names nor the technical details. That is exactly why the topic must continue to be treated strictly as a leak. The development is still noteworthy, because the context has since become more concrete. More recent reports on LGA1954 speak of a platform that may not only support Nova Lake-S, but also later CPU generations. Razor Lake is mentioned in this context, among others. That is not official either, but it would explain why Intel may apparently place greater emphasis on BIOS capacity and platform expansion for the upcoming motherboards.

If the table is accurate, Z990 and W980 would be the most technically interesting variants. According to the leak, both are said to offer up to 48 PCIe lanes, 12 of them with PCIe 5.0 directly from the chipset. This would be particularly relevant for motherboards with several fast M.2 slots, additional controllers, or workstation-oriented expansion. Q970 would rank below that, but with 44 lanes and 8 PCIe 5.0 lanes it would still sit well above a classic entry-level segment. B960 and Z970, by contrast, appear significantly more conservative. According to the leak, both are said to offer 34 lanes and provide no PCIe 5.0 lanes from the chipset. The difference would primarily lie in the overclocking functions: Z970 is said to support CPU and memory OC, while B960 only supports memory OC.
