When adults successfully live community
You can stretch the community concept in any direction like soft chewing gum. But it always fills me with pride when like-minded people indulge in a nice hobby here with us in their spare time and contribute your own content for the rest of the loyal readers at the same time. So for me community means not only forum and discussions, but also active contributions to the content for all. There are already countless debating clubs of various orientations on the Internet, so there’s no need for another one with my logo as a label. But it’s always nice to see when articles in the forum produce feedback that everyone can then benefit from, including (and especially) the authors of the articles themselves. Including me, of course.
The beauty of our community is the diversity of users and their (professional) CVs. Influences from many industries are visible and very many readers have already achieved much more than entry level in their profession. Something like this is enriching and at the same time also a solid basis for proper discussions. Yes, it also gets a bit more toxic as the number of users increases, but that’s also due to the current times and the social situation. After all, we are not a parallel society, but also part of the whole upheaval.
In the meantime, several colleagues write here (this is clearly visible) completely casually and spontaneously about the most beautiful triviality in the world, i.e. about everything that even remotely has a plug. Whether you build up a permanent editorial team and in return tighten the (also optical) thumbscrews on monetization, or run such things more as a kind of “open source”, where a website becomes a platform and does without excessive pixel wallpaper and affiliate links, that’s up to each operator to decide for himself. We compensate ourselves a little differently for our efforts, that’s all. After all, as long as all fixed and incidental costs are covered here, the world is perfectly fine. And so my very special thanks go to all those who diligently contribute to the content here and enrich it with many interesting facets. And anyone who is interested is welcome to join in.
Moderate optimization or profitable maximization? I very consciously chose the first one, because you don’t have to want too much too fast either. I already wrote about YouTube: organic growth is always more sustainable. For me, the current pressure is already more than sufficient; it should not become any more. After all, in the end it’s two companies, a family and to a certain extent your own body that take their toll together. At some point, you have to learn how to say no.
So, that’s enough for now, although there are so many things that have not been written. Some things are certainly better that way, other things would simply have been too much. Even though I am often seen as the lone person who is the last to turn off the lights here in the office or lab, none of this would have been possible without third parties, many coincidences and twists, and of course my family. And what else? The first 5 years felt like an eternity. And: You see and read each other 🙂
