The mouse setting under Windows
Windoof er Windows cannot overwrite or change the DPI settings of your mouse. But the values set in the mouse properties will change the perceived accuracy of your mouse by interpolation. So here is, the exact look in the mouse settings!
Figure 1 – We press the Windows key on the keyboard or click on the Windows icon at the bottom left. Then click on the settings.
Image 2 – And poof, a window opens where we click on Devices.
Image 3 – We click on mouse on the left
Image 4 – Then go to the next layer on the right edge with “More mouse options”.
Picture 5 – Almost done! Another window opens. Here you can set various things, like swapping the primary and secondary keys (lefties probably know this), double-click speed, etc.
Picture 6 – But we are mainly interested in the pointer options!
We need to check that there is no check mark in “Improve pointer acceleration”. Mouse acceleration, as it used to be called (after all, Windows doesn’t accelerate the mouse, it accelerates the pointer), so I guess it’s now called pointer acceleration, is sort of like anticipation. Windows recognizes when you move your mouse with a quick jerk and anticipates, you probably want to whiz now fast with the cursor over one or more screens. Then the cursor jumps from A to B in a flash and you have to look first: where is it? If you have this option enabled, don’t be surprised if you suddenly spin around in the game or overshoot the target during a quick target change. Furthermore, the “pointer speed” should be at the middle position by means of the controller. Then we have set other influencing factors regarding the effective DPI quasi to zero.
Attention!
If you’ve been using your mouse for ages with the “Improve pointer acceleration” option checked, you’ll immediately notice that the DPI settings of your mouse feel and are significantly different without this option. Here you may want to continue using the option with hooks, otherwise you will have to reprogram your muscle memory. Be aware, however, that your effective DPI is significantly different from the one set in your mouse. In fact, your cursor is unpredictable! You’re even missing out on a chance to significantly improve your targeting skills by reprogramming your muscle memory!
If you adjust the pointer speed faster or slower, you only change the interpolation and thus its effective DPI.
To what extent these settings have an effect on the effective DPI value, unfortunately I can’t give you any figures. But the fact is that you can see it and feel it. Furthermore, the interpolation of Windows affects e.g. the accuracy when aiming in games! The accuracy of the mouse in relation to the selected DPI setting always remains, it is influenced by Windows in the form of scaling (faster/slower to unpredictable). Which you will subjectively perceive as poorer accuracy.
