As I myself often have “back pain” due to my long periods of sitting in the office and laboratory, I am very well sensitized to the Fractal Refine test, as I completely changed my seating two years ago for precisely these painful reasons. Physically painful, because I suffered from shortened muscles due to the constant sitting, and then also financially, because my custom-made seating furniture from a German manufacturer (not an importer) hit the wall. Since then, however, I have really come to appreciate good seating and am therefore particularly fussy. The Fractal Refine tested today is of course not a custom-made product, but comes off the shelf and is also covered in summery, airy mesh. Even the fine buffalo leather, which I bought at the time for reasons that are no longer clear, doesn’t stick. I could have easily done without it,
But back to the test object. The Fractal Refine Chair is the first piece of seating furniture from the well-known Swedish company Fractal Design, which has so far made a name for itself primarily with high-quality PC cases and various accessories. With the Refine Chair, Fractal is targeting both gamers and office users who are looking for ergonomic comfort and stylish design. Clever, because it actually catches pretty much everyone who doesn’t like fat gaming seats.
Or to put it in marketing terms: Inspired by Scandinavian minimalism, the Fractal Refine combines modern design with high functionality. The chair is available in various materials, including breathable mesh (as in today’s test), soft fabric and a luxurious Alcantara version. The latter material in particular is familiar from the automotive sector and provides a high-quality, non-slip feel. The design stands out from the often clunky, racing seat-like gaming chairs and is more reminiscent of classic office chairs, which makes it versatile, whether in the office or in a gaming setup.
The ergonomic design of the chair definitely makes it stand out from the crowd and Donati’s neat Synchro-Tilt mechanism, in which the seat and backrest tilt in synchronization, ensures a natural and comfortable sitting posture. Other adjustment options such as 4D armrests and an adjustable lumbar support offer plenty of flexibility to adapt the chair precisely to your own needs. A particularly positive feature is the chair’s obviously durable construction, as the frame is made of fiberglass-reinforced plastic and the solid base is made of aluminum, which gives it great stability. Incidentally, Fractal offers a five-year guarantee on the construction, which demonstrates self-confidence and trust in its own product.
As a spoiler, let’s make a small assessment in advance, because while Fractal markets the chair as a gaming chair, it feels more like a high-quality office chair with a comfortable and stable seating experience that remains pleasant even during long sessions. The price of the Fractal Refine Chair varies depending on the choice of material: While the mesh and fabric versions cost around €549, the more sophisticated Alcantara version is around €900. This puts the chair in the upper price segment, but this is justified by the high-quality materials and the extensive ergonomic adjustment options, at least for the simpler textile versions. And it costs about half of what I had to pay for my chairs with a movable seat (Dondola). As you can see, the price is put into perspective with the viewing angle and comparative value. That’s an introduction, because now comes a box. Or rather two…
