Fort Knox for the pocket: iStorage diskAshur Pro2 and datAshur Pro in test

With a portable hard drive and a fast memory stick, iStorage with diskAshur Pro2 and datAshur Pro offers something like smart data safes for the secret (data) carrier of the world. And that's what already looks like a safe with the fancy number keypad and promises security, it is. We'll test it...

In detail: datAshur Pro

First of all, everything I wrote on the first page about diskAshur Pro – from the keyboard to the encryption used and the user profiles applies. The only difference is therefore in the size and type of the data carrier, as well as in the design as an extremely robust stick in the aluminium extrusion profile.

A waterproof housing (IP57) is used. This is tamper-proof and also protects against physical damage. The components of the internal drive have also been provided with a tamper-proof sheathing. Cracking? Maybe. Crack? Probably rather difficult.

The stick also has a small, integrated battery, which also charges relatively permanently via the USB. Thus, the stick can also be unlocked before it is plugged in. Since it can also be made bootable, this is certainly not a disadvantage. Who wants to fumble the pin in real time when booting up?

I tested the 64 GB version below, although there are also some numbers smaller. The portfolio ranges from 4, 8, 16 and 32 GB to this 64 GB stick. If you want, you can also order an individual laser engraving right away. Well, who needs it…

Benchmarks

For testing the respective read and write speeds, I use a simple, self-programmed tool, which allows me to read and write directly. All blocks, even if there are a fixed number of blocks for each block size, are used in the order purely randomly and also contain only random data. I run the tests for this in two groups, which in some what corresponds to the different application scenarios.

As a source or Destination is for memory only. The large blocks of data with up to one GB are exemplary for large file archives or Multimedia files such as Videos. Such data is generally used as a backup or for direct data exchange.

While the normal stick is the fastest when reading, but has more underground writing rates, both the encrypted hard drive and the stick are in the good midfield. Apacer's unbreakable hard drive is the final light, although the built-in hard drive is very similar to the diskAshure.

The smaller data blocks are representative of smaller files such as Documents, presentations or photos. Again, both iStorage products are fully in line with the norm, especially since it is further proof that encryption does not take any more time in the end, because it is still faster than the data carrier is able to write (or read) the data at all. .

Summary and conclusion

Both data carriers are exactly what you buy them for in the end: namely, safe. You can also easily decide on the size of the data to be backed up and choose between the very comfortable stick or the slightly more massive hard drive. Up to two TB of encrypted data should be enough for portable use. So there is really nothing against the two products and you can certainly do a lot of things right and nothing wrong with them.

Visually, haptic and also functional I definitely have nothing to do with it, because the use was and is problem-free and free of any question marks. They are both products that do not make life much more beautiful, but all the safer. And even such a feeling can contribute to relaxation. Data wellness for the cautious. This, too, fits perfectly into the present day.

No, of course it's not cheap, that would be too nice to be true. But it is at least affordable in terms of the features on offer, if you include the security. Especially the diskAshur Pro2 is rather something for companies, to which the purchase price in relation to the security profit is likely to be quite favorable.

At just under 400 euros, it is not really something for the private end user, but it is quite interesting for freelancers or smaller companies. The significantly cheaper stick, on the other hand, can also be of interest to the private user, because it does not always have to be the largest model.
