NVIDIA is heralding the end of several models in the RTX 40 series. Current reports suggest that the GeForce RTX 4070 will be discontinued as early as January 2025. The RTX 4060 and RTX 4060 Ti are set to follow in the course of the first quarter of 2025. The RTX 4070 in particular will no longer be produced after the last deliveries in January, which means that a shortage is to be expected soon.

Last stocks and dwindling availability
According to information from Chinese sales channels, in particular IT Home, NVIDIA’s board partners will receive the last deliveries of the RTX 4070 this month. Once out of stock, the model will no longer be delivered. At least one last restock is expected for the RTX 4060 and 4060 Ti in February, with the Ti variant in particular already considered to be in short supply. The final restock is expected to be in March at the latest.

RTX 4070 Super as unofficial successor
The withdrawal of the RTX 4070 is probably no coincidence. According to current market observations, the RTX 4070 Super offers a better price-performance ratio and is therefore increasingly pushing the standard 4070 off the shelves. NVIDIA seems to be deliberately steering demand towards the Super models. There is currently no concrete information on the future of the RTX 4070 Ti and the Ti Super variants. However, their availability could also be affected by the introduction of the upcoming RTX 5070 models.
Unclear strategy in the budget segment
The premature departure of the RTX 4060 and 4060 Ti is surprising. These models currently serve NVIDIA’s budget segment, and successors from the upcoming Blackwell generation have not yet been officially announced. However, according to rumors, the RTX 5060 and 5060 Ti could be introduced as early as the first quarter of 2025, which would facilitate the transition to the new generation. Whether this explains the decision to discontinue the RTX 4060 models early remains to be seen.
Market development and possible effects
The discontinuation of these models could put pressure on the GPU market in the short term. Gamers with a limited budget in particular are likely to notice the shrinking selection. However, if NVIDIA does indeed deliver the RTX 5060 series in the near future, the gap could be closed quickly. Otherwise, it remains to be seen how AMD and Intel will exploit this gap in the market. With the discontinuation of the RTX 4070 and the approaching EOL phase of the RTX 4060 models, NVIDIA is apparently preparing the ground for the next GPU generation. This means for users: Anyone who still wants to purchase a card from the Ada Lovelace series should not hesitate much longer. It remains to be seen how well the successors will fare in terms of price and performance.
