A new article has been published on AMD’s community page that deals with the current Radeon RX 7000/6000 GPUs. In the current performance rankings, the latest RDNA3 GPUs naturally occupy the top places, but they are also a lot more expensive than their RDNA2 predecessors at the same time.

The chart shows how the AMD Radeon RX 7900 and RX 6000 cards compare to the current and last GPU generations. While the Radeon RX 7900 series offers a much better price/performance ratio than the NVIDIA RTX 4090/4080 GPUs, this chart suggests that the Radeon RX 6950XT is still a much better choice than the RX 7900 XT. On average, the RX 7900 XTX offers 180 FPS at 4K resolution, which is a 7% gain over the RX 6950XT.
The performance gap narrows at lower 1080p resolutions. Current street prices for each card were used, so the RX 6950XT now costs $699 and offers an average of 338 FPS. In contrast, the RX 7900 XT, now available for $899, averages 355 FPS.The performance is thus 5% higher, but the price is almost 29% higher. The RX 6900 series is of course the better choice here.
The Radeon RX 6900 XT was not included in this comparison by AMD, although it is listed at various retailers for only $649. However, the supply of this card is very low, and it is much harder to find these days, so the price would not reflect the availability. Independent tests have shown that both the RX 7900 and RX 6800+ series are still cheaper than their RTX 40 counterparts. The only Ada Lovelace GPU that comes close to the RDNA series is the latest RTX 4070 Ti model:
The price level of the latest models has stabilized to the point that AMD and NVIDIA are considering launching cheaper and smaller options. However, that will probably only be the case when the stocks of the last-gen models are used up, which is unfortunately not yet the case.
