Sound check
In the low frequencies, the speakers produce a controlled and clean bass response. However, you have to accept that the bass response is already limited at frequencies below 60 Hz, which means that they are less present in the sub-bass ranges. This can quickly become noticeable when playing movies or bass-heavy music, as the deep rumble and popular punch are somewhat lacking. Nevertheless, the bass is not lacking at moderate volumes and is conveyed cleanly without masking the mids and highs. I praise that.
The high frequencies are reproduced clearly and in detail without sounding overly sharp. However, the lack of a crossover network and the high frequency connection via the woofer require a small sound correction including a slight boost of the high frequencies. The otherwise smooth-running small silk dome tweeter helps to keep the sound from becoming too sad. The mids, on the other hand, are surprisingly full and balanced, which is particularly beneficial for vocals and instruments. Here again, this combination benefits from the lack of a crossover, as the transition is very broadband and without audible phase errors. At some point, the large chassis can no longer cope and the dome tweeter gently plays along with the simple high-pass.
This makes the MR4 a good choice for music production and mixing, as it reproduces the subtleties and nuances of recordings really well. The speakers offer two sound modes: monitor mode and music mode. In monitor mode, they deliver a rather flat frequency response, which is ideal for mixing and producing music. Music mode, on the other hand, slightly boosts the mids and highs, resulting in a more dynamic and engaging sound that is particularly suitable for enjoying music and movies. These modes allow at least some flexibility – depending on the application and listening preferences.
The sound stage is wide and allows precise placement of instruments in the room. At moderate volumes, the sound quality remains transparent and clear, although distortion can occur at very high volumes. These speakers are best suited to moderate volumes, where they can develop their sound quality to the full.
Summary and conclusion
The sound of the Edifier MR4 Studio Monitor is pleasantly precise and balanced for this price, but has both strengths and weaknesses that may leave the bass generation in particular somewhat perplexed. It’s not for nothing that Studio Monitor is included in the name, although it’s not without reason that I tried not to write it out in full again and again in the article. It’s a very well-balanced sound, yes, but it won’t achieve a real studio monitor. In the semi-professional or amateur sector, it is one of the best offers you can currently find for around 100 euros, but you should stick to a price of around 100 euros given the reality and the technical possibilities. Even Edifier can’t perform miracles. Only approximately.
There’s nothing to complain about in terms of quality, and the build quality is still quite high. Many more expensive products below 150 euros can do this, but hardly any better. Seen in this light, it all fits together beautifully. The level is perfectly adequate in the near field, but it’s not really suitable for party sound reinforcement. On the other hand, the pair will reward you with a good level of detail if you don’t turn it down too low. This is also a peculiarity that is certainly due to the tuning and the drivers used.
Yes, for the price, this is effectively a no-brainer if you fall exactly into the target group scheme of desktop users and hobby mixers. Yes, gaming would also be possible (music mode), but not only. The headphone output is a little weak, but you can’t have everything for 100 euros. But you can have enough fun with two small speakers that are really worth the money. That makes up for some things that are due to the price, which you always have to keep an eye on.
