Volume flow vs. sound pressure level
Of course, every customer has different premises and you get here a very appealing performance in the case with a sufficient speed band. The Alpenföhn Wing Boost 3 ARGB High Speed is even slightly quieter than the reference in terms of sound pressure level at full speed and similar throughput. However, at about 25 CFM throughput and the 1000 rpm I like to take in the governed state, it gets louder in direct comparison and also a bit more obtrusive (growlier) in sound characteristics, which goes from about 15 cfm to 45 cfm. However, since fans are generally rarely run at full power, this is where a clear (and audible) disadvantage of the Wing Boost 3 becomes apparent.
Whoever installs the fan should pay attention to the structure-borne noise and vibrations, which can quickly find a resonator and then put the fan acoustically on the sidelines, even if the fan is decoupled quite well by the rubber corners. Such things are precisely the reason why we work with a large-volume and very rigid chamber and not with a thin and long wind tunnel. This also applies to the end user, who may please pay attention to a good decoupling here.
Volume flow and speeds
Again we see the slight bump at 25 CFM, where you need a bit higher revs, but otherwise the curve is very unspectacular, quite constant and exactly what I had already written in the above curve at the sound pressure level applies.
Conclusion
The Alpenföhn Wing Boost 3 ARGB High Speed looks nice and is per se not a fan that you would better not see in your system. So until then, there’s no criticism. However, the performance is rather average and the somewhat humming noise is also subjectively more perceptible than the pure dBA rates would suggest. What doesn’t work at all, however, are the totally exaggerated specifications in the data sheet, which suggest the absolute top performance in the 120 mm fan segment, which the fan can never fulfill.
This is a case of deliberate misleading of the buyer and it amazes me that the competitors seem to have tolerated this up to now, because 38 percentage points exaggeration in throughput and even a whopping 55 percentage points more in static pressure cannot even be explained by measurement tolerances, but are simply a flat-out lie from the marketing wonderland. This is a pity, because the fan is actually not that bad, even if it is not enough for a top position.
