Patchwork as VRS emergency patch (but not only)
Right after the release last week, the developers of the Dead Space remake had already officially confirmed that the studio will fix the game’s graphical problems. And yes, there was also something that you can definitely notice even as a user of a GeForce RTX 4090 when you play in ultra HD, for example, and the card slows down the forward momentum every now and then with snapping breaths and by perfidious foot traps. Besides various streaming jerks or thought jumps, it was mainly Variable Rate Shading (VRS) , where shadowy areas visually bury most of the details, although they are actually there and they should be visible on the PC if desired. As a PC gamer, what do I care about the graphical shortcomings of a PS5 at the end of a hard day’s work? Nothing! VSR must be out or at least switchable off. Thanks for this!
Of course, VRS was not the only technical problem. The sporadic startup crashes are also gone after the patch and the game also runs much smoother (but still not always consistently smooth). That was also the reason to wait for now after the early announcement of the patch and then not to have to provide benchmarks of the benchmarks later on. We are not a games site here and I can of course allow myself such a test, but just not as the main topic. Target group and so…
The clipping error (reproducible) is also taken care of after the patch. I should have saved it, but oh well. You learn from your mistakes.
Benchmarks
And how fast do the individual graphics cards render the game like that in the end? I picked out a scene with the centrifuge where pretty much everything is there to really knead the card. Since there is a memory station shortly before and I had already completely flattened the annoying biters in the room, there is a fairly consistent picture here thanks to a macro and trainer. Activating the centrifuge alone even puts a little pressure on the GeForce RTX 4090’s pulse. That is exactly why I did not use native Ultra HD in the benchmarks, because without upsampling (everything except Quality looks a bit uglier) it is only possible on a GeForce RTX 4090. Kind of. In Ultra HD and with upsampling to “Quality”, the results are about 20% lower than in WQHD and with “Balanced” they are more or less at par. So I can save that for now.
The game still suits the NVIDIA cards (and yes, there is no “evil” ray tracing, “that nobody needs anyway”) a bit better, especially in the lower resolutions. If you use weaker cards and/or want higher frame rates, you should play with the general preset or take a closer look at the individual settings. But since this is always very subjective, you have to optimize it for yourself. I don’t want to prescribe anything. But it does bring a little bit. It’s just that the game is generally a graphics card hog, even after the patch.
Summary, gallery and conclusion
If there’s anything to chalk up to the game, it’s really the rather loveless optimization as far as GPU starvation is concerned, because the CPU is rather in operating vacation mode here along with its colleagues from the motherboard brigade. That is, however, together with some streaming jerks, the only thing that was noticed negatively. The rest disappears in the irrepressible fun and fascination of a huge demolished spaceship with almost endless, corridors, rooms and halls. Good dialogs, nice boss fights, a logical and well-constructed story, as well as various side quests leave absolutely no room for boredom. And, of course, we do not forget about the small and large, wildly snapping and stinging necros, which you always meet exactly when you do not need them. And yes, they somehow feel like they never run out.
And what else? Game command! This is something from the “should or must do” category for a long time, even if it has become a real full-price game. If you want to save money, you should wait a little longer, but don’t lose sight of the game. It’s just fun, and you can really thank EA for once again revamping this gem in the most enjoyable way. You can also completely mess up something like that. And if you follow the dialogues and listen carefully, then a remake of Dead Space 2 isn’t completely impossible either. One can still dream, after all. And a tip to EA: if you’re going to collect cash twice, then please win the entire franchise. This wish is real.
