Some time ago, we reported on the Microsoft Copilot PCs from Microsoft. We also told you about the new Recall function, which takes screenshots of your screen periodically (i.e. after a certain period of time), which are then stored in a kind of database. This should make it possible to ask the Copliot what you did 2 weeks ago or to find missing items that you own. This has caused displeasure among many users and has also given rise to a number of data protection concerns. The company has now issued a statement on the matter.
Probably the most important thing is that this function is not activated by default. This means that as long as you do not proactively agree to this function, Recall will not be switched on. But to be able to use this function at all, it is necessary to have a Hello registration. Otherwise it won’t work. Microsoft also wants to add additional layers of privacy, including just-in-time decryption protected by Windows Hello Enhanced Sign-in Security (ESS), so that Recall snapshots are only decrypted and made accessible when the user authenticates. In addition, the search index database is also encrypted.
They also clarified how these “snapshots” are stored. These snapshots are stored on the local system and are not shared. Not even to the company itself or to others. In addition, you always receive a notification when a snapshot is taken. Incognito tabs or digital rights management are also recorded, so you can freely do what you want without fear that something will be recorded. Companies and customers have a choice. For customers using managed work devices, the IT administrator has the option to disable the saving of snapshots. However, the IT administrator cannot enable the saving of snapshots on your behalf. The decision to activate the saving of snapshots lies solely with the end user.
On June 18th you will get a deeper insight into the Microsoft Copilots -PCs.
