Wearing comfort, sound impression and microphone
The lightweight construction and soft ear cushions make the headset very comfortable for me to wear. Even after a long gaming session or a movie nothing presses. Or let’s say almost nothing, because I guess I have to make a little smear. Even the textile ear pads I prefer have a leather ring inside to ensure the closed (and extremely efficient sealing) design principle of the speaker. Thus, my ears heated up on warm days but noticeable and because they are probably for the D-shape of the pads also a little large, the leather inlay presses after a while but minimally at the top of the ear. The latter can be avoided by moving the ear cups slightly after putting on the headset to place the ear in it accordingly.
The operation is quite intuitive because ASUS relies on the usual positioning and functions. A slider to adjust the volume, which, like the third mouse button on the scroll wheel, also serves to mute the microphone. When the microphone is muted, a small red LED on the microphone lights up to provide visual feedback that the microphone is muted. The microphone itself is detachable, as known from other headsets. Another switch is used to control the lighting.
The sound impression was, as I described in the last paragraph, a bit “hollow” at first. However, this could be adjusted to personal taste quite well by using the equalizer. By lowering the bands between 1000 and 3000 Hz and slightly raising the high frequencies, I was able to optimize the sound in such a way that I now like it very much after a certain amount of listening. The sound character, probably due to the closed chamber around the ear, is a bit different than what I’m used to, but has proven to be very useful for me in locating sounds. During a short round of CS:GO, I was actually very good at matching where an opponent was coming from.
I also have little to complain about regarding the microphone. For evaluation I had some conversations via Teamspeak, Skype and Discord and received the same conclusion from different people: Loud and clear to understand, but a bit “muffled”. I guess the “Perfect Voice” option made the quality a little clearer.
