ASUS ROG Delta S in the test – Lightweight USB-C headset of the top class with a lot of light and some shadows

Armoury Crate Software

ASUS’ proprietary Armoury Crate software is required to configure the headset. With this powerful tool you can make all kinds of settings regarding sound and lighting and on top of that there is the possibility to create different profiles and even a game collection to create an individual profile for each title. This is very extensive, but also inflates the software to an installation size of over 500MB. ASUS account and login are optional.

When loading the program, it can sometimes take a few seconds until it recognizes the compatible devices and comes to terms with the other RGB programs. After that, the application runs smoothly and, as far as I can tell, without errors.

RGB lighting

Let’s start with the lighting, which ASUS obviously places a lot of importance on. Only rudimentary settings can be made directly in the Armoury Crate software. You are limited to different lighting modes and the choice of color.

For the extended configuration the AURA Creator must be installed additionally, with which then really each individual LED can be adjusted completely at will.

As known from other RGB programs, different layers can be created in the AURA Creator. In the example I created three layers, each with a different effect and color.

The colors of the LEDs are just as vivid in real life as they are in the photos shown – ASUS has really implemented this visually well.

Sound settings

Technically, however, the sound settings are much more interesting. In addition to the bit rate and the level, different sound optimizations can be selected here, for example, which optimize the sound in the corresponding direction depending on the application (gaming, film, music, …). The “Virtual Surround Sound” and the intensity adjustable “Reverberation Effect” are rather gimmicks in my opinion.

Unfortunately, typical for gaming headsets, the frequency range of the Delta S is also quite “boosted” from about 1000 to 3000 Hertz. This is roughly the range in which the human voice is mainly located during conversations, and this should be well understood during gaming when communicating with your teammates via Discord or similar. However, this leads to a somewhat “hollow” sound, especially when listening to music. Fortunately, this problem can be solved quite well with the equalizer. Furthermore, there are settings for “Bass Boost”, “Compressor” (simply put, avoids overdriving by sudden volume jumps) and the “Voice Clarity”. There are also some interesting settings for the microphone, such as noise reduction, “perfecting” (amplifying) the voice, and the AI noise reduction mentioned above.
