Intel has released its new Z890 motherboards, which are designed to support DDR5 memory. Among the most prominent offerings is the ASRock Z890 Taichi OCF, which supports memory speeds of up to 10,133 MT/s. This represents a significant increase over the standard JEDEC speeds of 4800 MT/s and is also above the native 6400 MT/s supported by Intel Core Ultra 200S CPUs. This makes the motherboard one of the fastest models currently available.
Intel’s Z890 platform is designed for overclocking and high memory performance, with different motherboard manufacturers offering different models. Intel itself specifies 8000 MT/s in “Gear 2” mode as the optimal value for the platform, while some models such as the ASRock Z890 Taichi OCF can achieve higher speeds. However, these speeds are only achievable with certain configurations and chips, such as the “K” series CPUs. Non-K models usually achieve memory speeds between 7600 and 8000 MT/s.
In addition to ASRock, other manufacturers such as MSI, Gigabyte, ASUS and Maxsun have also released motherboards with high memory support. These models are also designed for overclocking and high-performance memory. MSI offers the MEG Z890 Unify-X, which supports speeds of up to 9600 MT/s, while Gigabyte also achieves high values of up to 9500 MT/s with the Z890 AORUS Xtreme AI TOP and the Master AI TOP. ASUS is launching the ROG Maximus Z890 APEX with 9000 MT/s, while Maxsun is offering the iCraft Z890 Vertex, which is also designed for speeds of over 9000 MT/s.
An important point with these memory speeds is the use of single-rank DIMMs (1DPC), as these generally achieve more stable and higher speeds than dual-rank DIMMs. In addition, the memory DIMMs have a fallback speed below the advertised maximum speeds, usually around 5600 MT/s, to ensure stability in certain configurations.
The following table provides an overview of the specifications of the currently available Z890 motherboards, which are designed for high DDR5 speeds:
Manufacturer | Model | Max. DDR5 speed (MT/s) | Special features |
ASRock | Z890 Taichi OCF | 10.133 | Supports validated 9600 MT/s memory from V-Color |
MSI | MEG Z890 Unify-X | 9600 | Focus on overclocking, optimized design for high memory performance |
Gigabyte | Z890 AORUS Xtreme AI TOP | 9500 | Integrated fan design to stabilize the DIMMs |
ASUS | ROG Maximus Z890 APEX | 9000 | NitroPath technology for improved DIMM throughput |
Maxsun | iCraft Z890 Vertex | 9000 | Two DDR5 DIMM slots, solid VRM solution for overclocking |
Intel confirmed during a Q&A session that 8000 MT/s is the optimal value for the Z890 platform, but certain motherboards, such as ASRock’s Taichi OCF, are capable of supporting higher speeds. However, this requires the use of specific chips and configurations, and actual speeds may vary in practice depending on the components and settings used.
To summarize, the new Z890 motherboards offer a wide range of memory speeds and overclocking capabilities, with each model tailored to specific user needs. Support for DDR5 memory with speeds above 9000 MT/s is a significant step forward compared to previous platforms, but actual performance is highly dependent on the right configuration and components used.
