AMD is planning to launch two new processors with 3D V-Cache technology on the market. According to an industry insider, the Ryzen 9 9950X3D and Ryzen 9 9900X3D models will be available at the end of January 2025 and will be unveiled at CES 2025. Both processors are based on the Zen 5 architecture and expand the existing range of 3D V-Cache CPUs with options in the upper performance range.
The Ryzen 9 9950X3D has 16 cores and 32 threads. The chip is equipped with a single CCD (Core Complex Die), which contains 64 MB of standard cache. In addition, there is a layer of 64 MB 3D V-Cache, which increases the total capacity to 128 MB. This is supplemented by 16 MB of L2 cache, so that a total of 144 MB of cache is available. The Ryzen 9 9900X3D offers 12 cores and 24 threads. Similar to the larger model, a single CCD design is used.
The cache comprises 64 MB standard L3 cache, 64 MB 3D V cache and 12 MB L2 cache, resulting in a total capacity of 140 MB. The exact clock rates of the two processors have not yet been announced. However, a comparison with existing models such as the Ryzen 7 9800X3D allows conclusions to be drawn about the possible thermal power dissipation (TDP). This processor has a TDP of 120 watts, which is higher than the 65/105 watts of other models such as the Ryzen 7 9700X. Similar values could apply to the new Ryzen 9 models, possibly even up to 170 watts.

The use of 3D V-Cache in previous models has shown that this technology can increase performance in certain application scenarios, such as gaming, without significantly increasing energy consumption. With the new processors, AMD is expanding the range of its 3D V-Cache series and targeting user groups that require high computing power. The new chips could be particularly interesting for applications that benefit from a large cache. The exact release date, prices and regional availability have yet to be announced. AMD is expected to announce these details as part of the official presentation at CES 2025.
The introduction of these models continues the development of processors with 3D V-Cache technology, which was first introduced with the Ryzen 5000 series. Market interest in these products has apparently led to AMD now also using this technology in the current Zen 5 generation in higher performance classes. Whether and to what extent the new processors will be accepted on the market remains to be seen. The release could influence the competition with Intel’s upcoming processors in similar performance classes.
