The rumors about a Radeon RX 9070 XT with 32 GB VRAM persisted until AMD officially denied them. But it looks like there is an alternative possibility: instead of the expected XT version, a Radeon RX 9070 XTX with the same memory configuration could be released.
Confusion about the name
According to the leaker “Zhangzhonghao” on Chiphell, who has already provided accurate information on AMD graphics cards in the past, the new name is a reaction to previous speculation. Instead of equipping the Radeon RX 9070 XT with 32 GB VRAM, AMD could simply launch an XTX version with the same features. Until now, XTX variants were considered premium models with higher clock rates or extended specifications compared to the XT versions. In the case of the RDNA-4 architecture, however, this could be limited to a pure memory expansion and minimal clock rate increases, as the 9070 XT already uses the full Navi-48 chip.
32 GB VRAM: An AI argument?
Should the Radeon RX 9070 XTX really be released with 32 GB GDDR6, this would be particularly advantageous for AI applications and machine learning. RDNA 4 is known to rely on optimized AI and ML accelerators, so a variant with twice the memory could prove to be particularly useful in these areas. For gaming, 32 GB of VRAM would currently be an oversupply, but for special workloads this could make all the difference.
AMD is keeping a low profile
AMD officially denied the existence of a Radeon RX 9070 XT with 32 GB, but not explicitly an XTX variant with the same memory configuration. Benchlife also confirmed that various board partners are already working on models with 32 GB VRAM and continue to use the Navi-48 chip. Frank Azor, AMD’s Chief Architect of Gaming Solutions, recently pointed out that the Radeon RX 9070 XT will not be released in this form. However, the statement leaves enough leeway for an alternative naming.
Unveiling on February 28?
The official unveiling of the Radeon RX 9000 series is scheduled for February 28, with the market launch reportedly planned for March 6. It remains to be seen whether the Radeon RX 9070 XTX with 32 GB VRAM will actually be part of the presentation or whether the rumors will once again prove to be wishful thinking. The only thing that is certain is that AMD does not currently seem averse to beating the competition to the punch with a memory upgrade – if only to offer potential customers a supposedly better alternative.
