A benchmark test with the Time Spy test shows that the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT achieved a score of 22,894 in the graphics test. This puts it slightly above the performance of the RX 7900 GRE, but lags behind the RX 7900 XT.
Benchmark results of the RX 9070 XT in comparison
The recently published figures on the performance of the upcoming GPU based on RDNA-4 give a first impression of the positioning of the RX 9070 XT. According to rumors, the GPU was originally supposed to be on par with the NVIDIA RTX 4080. However, more recent reports suggest that it is only just above the RX 7900 GRE in terms of performance, which the benchmark results seem to confirm. A screenshot published by a leaker with the name “@All_The_Watts” shows the Time Spy results of the RX 9070 XT. The GPU achieves 22,894 points in the graphics test, which is around 2% higher than the RX 7900 GRE. Compared to the RX 7900 XT, however, it is around 17% slower.
Comparison with other GPUs
It is important to note that synthetic benchmarks such as Time Spy do not always reflect actual performance in games. Nevertheless, the results suggest that the RX 9070 XT cannot compete with higher-ranked GPUs such as the RX 7900 XT or the NVIDIA RTX 4070 Ti. The latter has comparable scores in similar benchmarks, but offers better performance overall, especially in applications such as ray tracing.
The following table shows the position of the RX 9070 XT compared to other GPUs of the current generation:
GPU | Time Spy graphics points | Comparison to the RX 9070 XT |
---|---|---|
RX 7900 XT | Higher | ~17 % faster |
RX 7900 GRE | Comparable | ~2 % slower |
RTX 4070 Ti | Comparable | Better RT performance |
If the performance of the RX 9070 XT is indeed only slightly better than the RX 7900 GRE, AMD may have to offer the GPU at a price below 600 USD, possibly closer to 500 USD. This would be necessary to create an attractive price/performance ratio compared to other previous generation models. AMD is reportedly planning to launch the RX 9070 XT and other RDNA-4 GPUs at CES 2025, alongside technologies such as FSR 4 and new Ryzen 9000X3D processors. NVIDIA and other manufacturers are also expected to present their latest products.
