The packaging for the AMD Radeon RX 9070 XT has appeared for the first time and is already causing a stir. In addition to the initial specifications, one piece of information stands out in particular: a recommended power supply unit with at least 900W. What is that supposed to be?
Performance hunger almost at RTX 5090 level
The Radeon RX 9070 XT is about to be officially unveiled and, as it should be, the rumor mill is buzzing. A leak from @Gawroski shows the first packaging of the new RDNA-4 card, albeit only from the side. Nevertheless, some details can be gleaned, including 64 compute units (4096 cores) and support for AMD’s HYPR-RX and FSR. Much of this was already known from earlier leaks, but there is one detail that makes you sit up and take notice: the recommended power supply unit.
The system should be able to provide at least 900 watts – even though the Radeon RX 7900 XTX still had a much lower requirement. AMD therefore seems to have either drastically increased the TDP or opted for a particularly generous safety margin. The fact that an RX 9070 XT is in the same range as an RTX 5090, which supposedly recommends 1000W, seems simply exaggerated.
Mispressure or OC buffer?
Two scenarios are conceivable: Either the 900W is a simple misprint or AMD is planning an aggressive clocking strategy that includes a higher power consumption as a reserve. The only thing that is clear so far is that without an official statement, this remains a speculative matter

Key technical data and market launch
It is already known that the Radeon RX 9070 XT will be launched on the market with 16 GB GDDR6 memory, a 256-bit memory connection and a boost clock of up to 3.1 GHz. AMD is thus clearly positioning the card in the upper mainstream segment. The official unveiling is planned for the end of February, with a market launch in March. Only then will it become clear whether AMD’s 900W claim is justified or just a gross exaggeration.
