AMD Radeon Pro W5700 water-cooled and overclocked – the reasonable meets the impossible, high spirits and blasphemy

Overclocking with the MorePowerTool (MPT)

The original card was limited to 150 watts for the GPU power, the consumer version may grab 35 watts more. As long as you stay in these ranges (or maybe a little bit above them), there is no danger for life and limb. At the most, the wallet is more heavily demanded at the socket, but we leave that out. I have decided on a limit of 225 watts (only for the GPU), which in my opinion is still a reasonable compromise of what is technically reasonable and feasible and still doesn’t slaughter the fun factor. But how do you overclock such a graphics card with the (logically) unsuitable Radeon Pro software and without Wattman? Because even tools like the MSI Afterburner gallantly refuse to cooperate:

This is nothing new and that’s probably why nobody has thought about it before. The BIOS of the Quadros has been changed anyway, nothing works. And the Radeon doesn’t look any better at first glance. Only we still have the MPT. And what hasn’t been activated can be made up for quickly and also expanded:

Write SPPT, restart and lo and behold, the Afterburner is suddenly ready to cooperate! With the settings visible below it works with water cooling and a usable chip also over 2.1 GHz with about 220 to 225 watts under load on average for the GPU and about 250 watts for the whole board. These settings then ran for over 6 hours for the entire benchmark suite without a crash or increased temperatures.

The card can keep the clock rate, albeit with plenty of thirst. But that’s not what it’s all about for once, but the fact of being able to do something “forbidden”. And this again doesn’t lack a certain explosiveness, because it also shows what the unfortunately Apple-exclusive full version could have achieved in the hands of normal PC-users. You will see the individual results of the benchmarks later on the next page.

Well cooled we go into the next round and we look again at tact and temperatures, because there is still something possible! While in simpler CAD applications it is up to 2130 MHz, under permanent full load you can still calculate with 1960 to 1980 MHz in the average. So that’s over 300 to almost 500 MHz more, depending on the application and load. Or in percent, it is 20 to 30% more clock speed, with 40 to 45 more electrical power to be supplied. However, this is no longer efficient, but it will be interesting to know how much of the additional clock speed is left over in performance gain.

This has already been really worthwhile! At least as far as the beat and temperatures are concerned.
