Summary and overview of all games in WQHD
The WQHD resolution (2560 x 1440 pixels) is popular in gaming as it offers a compromise between image quality and performance. It places greater demands on the GPU than Full HD, but remains less demanding than 4K, which allows a practical evaluation of modern graphics cards. Tests in WQHD focus on classic rendering performance, as ray tracing is largely disregarded here, apart from a few exceptions such as F1 2024. I wrote something about the differences in the calculation in Full HD.
Normalizing FPS values across different games makes it possible to objectively compare hardware performance. Since games are differently demanding for CPU and GPU, the FPS values are brought to a uniform standard before an average is calculated. This prevents distortions due to the characteristics of individual titles and allows for a balanced evaluation. This approach is used for both the average FPS and the P1 Low.
Important: I would like to explicitly point out once again that all Blackwell cards correspond to the reference data and are not overclocked, while the RDNA4 cards have both already been provided with a lot of overclocking headroom ex works and, depending on the card and setting, come to the customer with at least 5 or a maximum of 10 percent performance increase. This also applies to the RX 7900XTX, as my MBA card now also has a defective vapor chamber and is therefore unusable. The Blackwell cards (all in the reference design) can also be increased by around 5 percent through simple overclocking and without extensive RAM OC. The result looks almost exactly the same as in Full HD. The RX 9070 has XTX performance and the RX 9070 is now almost 12 percentage points behind. The RTX 5070 is around 11 percentage points behind the RX 9070, which could not be caught up with by OC. However, the non-overclocked RTX 5070 Ti could easily beat the RX 9070XT with OC, but it would first have to be done and run stably.
The P1 Low is a benchmark value that describes the lowest 1% of the measured FPS. In contrast to the average value, which reflects the general performance, the P1 Low specifically shows performance drops that can affect the gaming experience. It is determined by sorting the FPS values and determining the highest value of the bottom 1%, which isolates serious frame drops. This makes the P1 Low an important indicator for the stability of the frame rate and the detection of problems such as micro-stutters. We already know a similar result from Full HD and I don’t need to repeat myself.
In WQHD without DLSS, the CPU load in demanding games is usually lower than in lower resolutions such as Full HD, as the GPU takes on more computing work in higher resolutions. This means that the CPU rarely becomes a limiting factor. However, the load also depends heavily on the game mechanics and optimization. The difference between the RX 9070, RX 9070XT and the RX 7900XTX has even increased slightly, but is similar in size.
Titles with complex AI, elaborate physics calculations or many simultaneous processes also place significant demands on the CPU in WQHD. However, if the GPU is heavily utilized, the CPU load often remains moderate, as less data has to be provided for image calculation. As long as the CPU performance matches the GPU, it is usually sufficient in such scenarios. In addition, the following values for GPU and CPU power consumption provide information about the situations in which which components work under full load. It is also interesting to note here that RDNA3 generates a slightly higher CPU load than RDNA4.
The efficiency is then the counter calculation, so to speak, where the amount of watts used (average over the respective game) and the average FPS of the game in question are compared:
