AMD continues its foray into the world of upscaling technologies with the latest version of FidelityFX Super Resolution (FSR). FSR 4, which was recently unveiled at CES 2025, promises better visual quality, fewer artifacts and reduced ghosting effects. However, one major limitation remains: The technology is only available for RDNA 4 GPUs.

FSR 3.1 as the basis for FSR 4
According to the well-known leaker @Kepler_L2, FSR 4 will build seamlessly on FSR 3.1. This means that all current games that support FSR 3.1 can be easily updated to FSR 4. Developers will be able to benefit from the new technology by simply exchanging the corresponding DLL files. This is a considerable advantage for users, who can look forward to a broad portfolio of compatible games.
RDNA 4 as a prerequisite
Despite the positive outlook, one critical limitation remains: FSR 4 will only be available on RDNA 4 GPUs. AMD uses the dedicated AI accelerators installed on the RX 9070 series to enable improved upscaling quality. Older GPU generations are excluded, which could potentially exclude many users.
So you're saying all FSR3.1 games will be day1 FSR4 games?

Technical improvements
FSR 4 comes with several new features, including
- High-quality 4K upscaling, which should deliver significantly improved details thanks to the AI-based algorithms.
- Frame generation, which generates additional images and thus increases the frame rate.
- Lower latency, which is achieved through the integration of Anti-Lag 2.
These features aim to offer a better balance between performance and visual quality, but it remains to be seen how well the implementation works in practice.
Market launch and expectations
AMD’s RX 9070 series will be available for pre-order from March 23, according to recent reports. As a result, FSR 4 is expected to be available at the same time or shortly thereafter. Whether there will be extended support for older GPU generations in the long term is currently unclear. FSR 4 represents a logical further development of AMD’s previous upscaling technology. The seamless integration into existing FSR 3.1 titles should ensure rapid adaptation. However, the strict limitation to RDNA 4 GPUs could present some users with a difficult decision. It remains to be seen whether the new functions justify the upgrade.
