Ryzen and Vega combined: AMD's Ryzen 5 2400G and Ryzen 3 2200G in review

Preliminary remark and update

Based on the results, we deliberately focus on the Ryzen 5 2400G, but still take the Ryzen 3 2200G with us for the sake of completeness. If you plan to use such an APU semi-professionally or privately in a productive environment, the surcharge to the higher model is usually rather unimportant, but the performance advantages are not. Even if you can often save yourself by overclocking even with the smaller model, in many user profiles overclocking is not even accepted as a mind game. Those who work with it almost always use such solutions out-of-the-box. Rightly so, by the way.

Since BIOS and driver updates were submitted again at the last moment before the weekend, we would also like to point out that we were not able to renew all of the extensive application benchmarks again (but only the most important ones), especially since then also nor the motherboard gave up the spirit. We involuntarily have a few of the synthetic benchmarks still on thursday's level, with the Ryzen 3 2200G in particular still able to gain a little after the update.

Multimedia: Encoding and Editing

Whenever a Ryzen desktop CPU can shine, the APUs are also well in the running. However, the Ryzen 5 2400G makes the clearly better figure of the two due to the SMT and the higher bar.

Compression and Compute

Exactly the same applies in this application area, since multi-threading also significantly helps CPUs with nominally lower IPC. Only the expensive Core i5-8400 saves itself through its higher clock often with the front line.

Rendering / Raytracing

Same approach, same judgment. The Ryzen3 2200G often operates much slower and in many cases one should consider whether the 70 Euro savings at the time of purchase will not take revenge at some point.

Web applications

With the exception of a very Intel-weighted application, the Ryzen 5 2400G scores well, especially if you overclock it again (which is not possible with the Intel Core i5-8400). With a little more beat, the Ryzen 3 2200G is back in the game, but otherwise it's not.

Office and Design

Here there is a center and front field for the Ryzen 2400G, the small Ryzen 3 2200G is just scouring through. In general, however, more clock helps both
