AMD announces Ryzen 7 9800X3D for November 7

AMD has officially confirmed that the Ryzen 7 9800X3D will be released on November 7, 2024. At the same time, the company announced price reductions for its Ryzen 9000 series. This is AMD’s response to the competition in the CPU market, particularly the upcoming releases from Intel and other manufacturers.

Technical data and release of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D

The Ryzen 7 9800X3D is based on AMD’s Zen 5 architecture and uses 3D V-Cache technology. This CPU has 8 cores and 16 threads, with a base clock of 4.70 GHz and a boost clock of 5.20 GHz. The processor contains 96 MB L3 cache and 8 MB L2 cache. The additional 3D V-Cache is an important feature designed to improve performance in certain workloads such as gaming and compute-intensive applications. The processor has a Thermal Design Power (TDP) of 120 watts. According to earlier reports, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D will be one of the first chips of the new generation to be commercially available. The higher-priced models, such as the Ryzen 9 9000 series, will follow at the beginning of next year. In terms of price, the Ryzen 7 9800X3D is expected to be in the same range as its predecessor, the Ryzen 7 7800X3D, which had an RRP of 449 US dollars. Official prices for the new processor are not yet known, but preliminary listings at US retailers suggest similar price ranges.

Price reductions for the Ryzen 9000 series

In addition to the announcement of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, AMD has confirmed price reductions for the recently launched Ryzen 9000 series CPUs. These price adjustments affect both the high-end models and the mid-range CPUs. The price reductions range from 30 to 50 US dollars, depending on the model. The price reductions mainly affect four processors in the series: the Ryzen 9 9950X, Ryzen 9 9900X, Ryzen 7 9700X and Ryzen 5 9600X. These CPUs were only launched in August 2024, but the price adjustments are a reaction to the initial pricing, which many considered too high compared to the previous models and the competition’s offerings.

New prices at a glance

The following table shows the current prices of the affected Ryzen 9000 models compared to their original list prices:

Processor New price (US) Original price (US) Price reduction (%)
Ryzen 9 9950X $599.00 $649.00 -7.7 %
Ryzen 9 9900X $419.00 – $429.00 $449.00 -14 %
Ryzen 7 9700X $309.99 – $329.00 $359.00 -14 % to -8.9 %
Ryzen 5 9600X $249.00 – $269.99 $279.00 -4.3 % to -3.5 %

The price cuts apply to several online retailers, including Newegg, Amazon and Microcenter. While some retailers had already offered specific discounts prior to the official price adjustment, the new prices are now confirmed by AMD and apply to all retailers. In addition, all processors include a game bundle that includes Space Marines 2 and Unknown9: Awakening. This is a standard offer designed to increase the appeal of Zen 5 CPUs, especially in light of the upcoming release of the Intel Core Ultra 200S and AMD’s Ryzen 9000X3D series.

Assessment and market situation

The price adjustments and the upcoming release of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D show that AMD is trying to strengthen its position in the CPU market. The initial pricing of the Ryzen 9000 series was met with criticism as many felt it was too high compared to previous Zen 4-based models. With the new price cuts and the introduction of 3D V-Cache technology in the upcoming Ryzen 7 and Ryzen 9 processors, AMD hopes to defend its market share against the competition. It is particularly interesting that AMD announced the price cuts just a few months after the launch of the CPUs. This suggests that the new Zen 5 generation may not have had the expected sales launch and that the price adjustments were necessary to increase acceptance.

Outlook

With the introduction of the Ryzen 7 9800X3D and the planned release of further 3D V-Cache processors in early 2025, it remains to be seen whether AMD can successfully defend its market share against Intel and other competitors with these measures. The price reductions should give the CPUs more competitive advantages, especially in view of the already established Zen 4-based models and the upcoming competition from Intel.
