Power consumption under full load
Let’s now compare the already known three variants: the factory clock of 1100 MHz, the “Lethal Boost” mode with 1200 MHz and our fixed clock of 1201 MHz to outsmart Powertune and avoid the downclocking.
The direct comparison between the clock rates and the measured power consumption is interesting for this. At 1100 MHz without “Lethal Boost” enabled, the card clocks down very quickly from the 1100 MHz to 1050 MHz and remains at the lower clock. If you activate the special performance mode, the clock alternates quite constantly between 1200 MHz and 1100 MHz. If you increase the clock by even a single Mhz, it remains permanently at the highest level and is not affected by the limitation.
But what does all this mean for the power consumption? While the average settles at about 296 watts during the factory stroke (with the corresponding peaks up and down), the “Lethal Boost” mode results in an almost constantly high value of about 314 watts. The non-alternating fixed clock of 1201 Mhz only demands 2 watts more without any limitation, so juggling the clock rates doesn’t result in any practical benefit and almost makes the advantage of the TDP limitation via the clock introduced with the GHz Edition absurd in the graphics card presented here with significantly increased clock rates.
To complement our observations, we of course repeated all these measurements again in a game sequence, with a quite astonishing and so not expected result.
