Summary
The Sapphire 7970 Toxic 6GB can’t be denied a very high recognition value, because both the achievable frame rates and the resulting noise level are above average. The added value of the total 6 GB memory expansion is present, but is very limited in normal application scenarios up to 2560 x 1440 pixels. Thus, the very high purchase price of over 600 Euros can hardly be justified and also prevents a more positive assessment of this card. It is really fast – no question, but the GHz edition and the associated PowerTune gadgets could have been omitted. We even noticed that the frame rates dropped again when the PowerTune limits were fully utilized.
The “Lethal Boost” mode mainly wins via the higher GPU and memory clock, which has a very positive effect at higher resolutions, but not via the hectic clock jumps, which also do not lead to a noticeable reduction in power consumption once you really utilize the extremely extended PowerTune options. The fan profile is much too aggressive and prevents a better result in combination with the clock limiter. The card is simply too loud.
We have to judge the manual overclocking negatively, which could open interesting perspectives thanks to the very generously designed power supply, but already fails in the beginning because the clock is then no longer lowered in load-free operation. This in turn causes the card to heat up continuously, which leads to clearly perceptible fan activity after a while even without load, not to mention the power consumption of almost 50 watts in idle mode. You simply have to operate the card as intended by the manufacturer, only then will the power consumption and available gaming performance be right.
In multi-monitor mode, the gaming performance of a current graphics card is only sufficient for a maximum of 3 or 4 monitors. For higher resolutions, you then have to use at least 2 graphics cards, which puts the utility value of the very large memory expansion, as already described, a bit in question. For professional applications, you are usually better off with a FirePro or Quadro card, and there are other solutions for large video walls without required high 3D performance. In the end, the purpose of this card is difficult to understand. If it absolutely has to be a Toxic, we would rather go for the version with a 3 GB memory expansion and use the money saved to treat our better half to more than just a thick ice cream sundae.
